Karibib — TOO often a letter is written and a methodology based on creating pseudo facts used to argue a case. A point of view or opinion is exactly that, it is not a fact. Not all truth is relative. If it were, then stating it as such would be a contradiction in terms.
When Shikongo wrote that Christianity is one of the primary ideological causes for slavery and “has held humanity back by a thousand years” [The Namibian, May 2013], one is immediately made aware that he/she has not taken a closer look at history and what actually transpired.
You propose that slavery is a function of Christian ideals, as is the mind-set of colonisation. Maybe a comprehensive history of slavery and conquest (worldwide) might make you aware that slavery was around well before Christianity, was prevalent in most cultures, and is still very much alive today. It is human depravity and greed that can be more accurately tied to slavery than a religion.
In addition, it may be fact that the Pope received the first slaves and Christianity was used to justify slavery and apartheid by misusing a few verses in the Old Testament but does being the Pope make you a Christian as described in the Bible?
Well, let us compare how Jesus came to earth, lived here and the circumstances surrounding his death, to that of the Pope and his predecessors. Jesus died without a place to sleep, no savings or any earthly future to speak of, and was crucified wearing a crown made of thorns.
The Pope on the other hand is in charge of a large financial institution, rides in golden carriages, calls himself Father and wears a crown worth more than the price of an average Namibian's house. How is it that the Pope fears death so much when Jesus did not resist His?
It is clear that the Pope has little or nothing to do with Christianity as given in the Bible. He is just a man at the head of a large Christian institution which calls itself the Roman Catholic Church. So it is irrelevant that he received the first slaves, at least from a biblical point of view.
Apartheid was founded by quoting the scriptures about Ham son of Noah being cursed by God. Jesus was not born a white man, but was most likely a darker skinned Middle Eastern man. So at that point apartheid already had no leg to stand on by raising the white race above others, not to mention its contradiction of the biblical commandment to love one another.
Using a Bible to do things that contradict its teachings, means it might as well not have been used at all.
The Bible is explicit in its teachings in Romans 13:8 and Matthew 23:22. ‘Love one another'. If you can give an argument against love, and all its attributes i.e. kindness, compassion, patience, forgiveness, selflessness etc., then you will have to indeed write an interesting opinion piece.
I would also like to know how it is you propose to relate the development, forecasting, addition and subtraction from society, by omitting certain religions. That is clearly a large task, and safely assumed, an impossible one. Also those ‘many' who argue this, to whom do you so specifically refer?
Namibian society was indeed founded on undemocratic colonialist principles, but again, did sincere Christians fund and drive colonisation? I encourage you to investigate your claims.
As far as producing scientists, I invite you to publish your credentials in this field.
I have met some incredible minds in their respective scientific, engineering and medical fields at church where they were praising Jesus Christ, none the less. I do not believe you can relate academic ability to religious views, it is absurd and irrational.
If it is a secular society you want, then take a look around. You are in one. You can do as you please within the confinement of the law, without religious restrictions. There are also many schools in Windhoek (and Namibia) that practice secular humanism.
In terms of Christian public holidays, you are more than welcome to practice your secular views over the Christmas and Easter period and Sundays. Enjoy working over these days, Christians will not force you to celebrate with them.
So just as the Pope and apartheid falsely use/used Christianity as a guise for their actions, it seems you used unfounded arguments to support your opinion as pseudo-fact. Now that is truly un-scientific hogwash. Source
